How to sell NFTs — tips for newcomers

Artists and creatives who are just starting out selling NFTs or digital collectibles ask us how to sell NFTs all the time, given that Amberfi builds marketplaces for creatives that contain state-of-the-art security protections. There are several techniques that creators have found work well to get your NFT sales flowing. Here are a few:

Create high-quality works

Make sure you spend time creating the best work you can, whether it’s a digital artwork, photograph, video, audio clip or piece of music. Is the creative work beautiful, provocative, and original rather than ordinary, unimaginative, and derivative? Does it touch people on an emotional level? Make sure it’s distinctive and conveys a sense of uniqueness. Try to add your own personal style.

Create a collection

The most successful NFTs are typically part of a collection rather than a one-off (though one-of-ones can do well in their own right). Collectors like to buy into something big, so see if you can group some of your works together. Are they tied together thematically? Are the works making a social, political, cultural or artistic statement? Are they from a certain period of creativity in your career? Can they be considered a project? Be creative in grouping your works.

Add bonus material

An NFT can be more than an artwork or photo. You can add what’s called utility or unlockable content. An NFT can contain bonus materials, rewards, or perks such as entry to an event or an online community, access to a private Zoom chat, or even lunch with the artist or creator — use your imagination!

How to sell NFTs

Tell your story

Don’t just upload the work and call it a day. Write a compelling description. Tell the backstory of how the work, series or collection came to be. What inspired it? What went into its creation? Use the About field to tell users something about yourself and your journey as a creator. Many collectors like to support unknown or emerging artists.

Study successful sales

Look at a selection of marketplaces like OpenSea, Foundation and Objkt to see if you can find comparable works and discover how they’re faring. Are they packaged together as part of a series? Were they released in limited editions? How many were minted at what price? Don’t dive in until you do a little homework.

Other tips

Some final tips:

  • Instead of starting with your very best work, you may want to start with a smaller number of items that are priced to sell. That will give you a track record as a seller.
  • Begin with some Buy now items before you try an auction.
  • Fill out optional fields like Tags to expand your works’ visibility in the marketplace.
  • Build up interest in your work on social media to generate some engagement.
